Finding the right mattress can be a daunting task. Going to a department store or mattress store, you will see dozens of brands offering a plethora of mattresses with different claims and prices that range from pocket-friendly to eye-watering levels. You’ll also likely be sleeping on the same one for the next 5 to 10 years so a good quality mattress is vital to help you rest properly at night so you can wake up in the morning feeling great! The best way to start is by doing your homework before you walk into the showroom.
Do Online Research First
One way to do that is by doing online research and reading customer reviews for the best mattress in Hong Kong. Not only will this give you a good idea of what mattress brands and products are available, but you’ll also get a better idea of what materials are inside a premium mattress. Once you have an idea of what you’re looking for, you can begin comparing the prices to see which ones fit your budget.
A queen size mattress in Hong Kong from a reputable international brand can range from $10K to $80K. The prices may be high but it might not reflect their quality and of course, most mattress companies don’t offer exchanges or refunds once you’ve made your purchase so you are putting out a lot of money for something that might not be right for you. The good thing is there are some online mattress companies who do offer 100 Nights Trial so you can sleep on your mattress at home and be sure that it’s the right one for you. We do however recommend to always try before you buy, so do stop by a showroom and make sure you test out your mattress! Everyone has a different body type, sleeping posture, and sleeping habit so no one mattress can fit all. We can show you how to choose your mattress like a pro when you’re testing it in a showroom.
How to Test a Mattress in Mattress Stores in Hong Kong
-
Sit on the Edge of the Mattress
Does it sag down? If it does, the edge of the mattress won’t support you properly when you’re sleeping and you’ll have more difficulty getting in and out of bed.
A firmer edge will increase your sleeping surface by up to 30%, make it easier to sit on the edge of your mattress, and will make getting in and out of bed easier.
-
Pinch the Side of the Mattress
If the mattress has a pillow top, pinch the side of it. Make sure you can feel firmer filling inside the pillow top. If you feel only fabric and air, the pillow top won’t offer you proper support while you sleep.
Next press your fingers into the side of the mattress (below the pillow top, if the mattress has a pillow top). Does the side of the mattress press back into your fingers? That’s the sign of a mattress with stronger support. If the side doesn’t press back and you can feel the springs, this mattress won’t offer you proper support.
-
Lie Down in the Sleep Position You Actually Sleep In!
Are you a side sleeper or back sleeper? Do you prop up two pillows or stick your right hand under the pillow? Whatever is your unique sleep position, make sure you lie down on your mattress in that exact same sleep position.
Why? Because you want to check if you’ll actually be comfortable when you go to sleep.
So... If you toss and turn, do that. If you sleep on your stomach with your head a little crooked, do that. And if you sleep with pillows under your knees, ask the sales associate if you can do that, too!
-
Jump on the Mattress!
That’s right. Jump right in the middle of your mattress (bottom down). This tests the elasticity and support of your mattress. A premium mattress will be elastic (which means you will bounce right back up) and supportive (which means that you will feel the deeper support layers of the mattress).
If you don’t bounce right back up, the mattress may not be elastic enough. This is often a problem with all-foam mattresses.
If your mattress sinks too much, your mattress may not be supportive enough. If the mattress sinks so much that you “bottom out” and can feel the bed, stay away! The mattress is too soft.
-
Can You Get In and Out of the Mattress Easily?
Do you feel “stuck” in the mattress? If it takes extra effort to get in and out of the mattress, this could be a sign that your mattress is too soft.
-
Check for Back Support in the Mattress
First, lie on your side. Does the mattress exhibit the “hammock effect” where your hips sag down and your spine is not properly aligned? This is a sign that your mattress is too soft and may cause back problems.
Next, lie on your back. Slide your hand under your lower back. The mattress should make contact with your lower back and support it. However, if it seems “difficult” to slide your hand under your lower back, this may be a sign that the mattress is sagging and too soft to provide proper support.
-
Test for Motion Isolation in the Mattress
Do you share a bed with a partner? Test for motion isolation by asking another person to get in and out of bed while you’re lying down. Pocket-coil mattresses are known for exhibiting the highest degree of motion isolation.
Pro Tip: To truly test the motion isolation of your mattress, you will need to lay the mattress on either a platform bed or the floor. Some bed bases, like a slatted base or box springs, will move when your partner gets in and out of bed.
-
Does the Mattress Have a Tufted Top?
Run your hands over the top of the mattress. If you feel a tufted top, that means the comfort layers of the mattress have been stitched together to ensure a uniform feel, guarantee that support doesn't shift, and increase the lifespan of your mattress. Many all-foam mattresses will not have tufted tops.
-
Does the Mattress Have Handle?
Is your mattress easy to handle? Experts recommend changing your sheets every week and rotating your mattress every three months. Sturdy handles will make both tasks easier to do.
-
How Heavy is the Mattress?
Try to pick up the mattress -- yes, try lifting it off the bed! The weight of the mattress is correlated with the density of the materials inside the mattress. Although you don’t need a mattress that is extremely heavy, a mattress that is too light may be a sign of a mattress won’t support you properly. If you can easily lift the mattress off the bed with just 1 hand, the mattress may not feature materials that offer greater deep support, such as orthopedic foam and steel pocket coils.
In addition, when picking up the mattress at the corner of the mattress, you’ll also be able to observe if the mattress is flimsy or easy to bend. If the mattress curves a lot when lifted off the bed, its build quality may be suspect. Poor build quality is problematic because the mattress may not last as long as the manufacturer claims. Many all-foam mattresses will showcase this “bending” problem. As a solution, please remember to look for mattresses that feel more “sturdy”.
Why is Testing Your Mattress So Important in Hong Kong?
Getting the right mattress could help improve your quality of sleep. A better quality of sleep keeps your immune system awake and ready to keep you healthy during the flu season. It also helps you recharge and get ready for the morning.
Independent consumer organizations also published mattress comparison research results and reminded the public that the amount of body support, comfortability, and durability of a mattress has nothing to do with its price. They revealed that the most satisfying back support has a lot to do with the materials inside your mattress!
In other words, when you’re replacing your mattress, roll around, fall asleep and spend as much time as possible when testing out the new mattress and lastly follow the tips we just shared.
